What biomedical engineering does

Biomedical engineering applies engineering practice to healthcare technology — the equipment, devices and systems used in patient care. In a hospital, the biomedical engineering function covers much more than repairs: it is the discipline that keeps technology safe, available and appropriate across its whole lifecycle.

Stage one: planning and procurement

Good equipment decisions benefit from engineering input before the purchase. Biomedical engineers translate clinical requirements into technical specifications, evaluate whether equipment can be supported locally, review installation requirements against the facility, and flag total-cost-of-ownership issues that clinical buyers may not see.

Stage two: installation and acceptance

At delivery, biomedical engineering verifies what has arrived, supervises or reviews installation conditions, and performs or witnesses acceptance testing — the documented confirmation that the equipment performs as specified before entering service.

Stage three: operation and maintenance

Through the equipment's working life, biomedical engineering carries the maintenance programme: scheduled preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, calibration or verification where applicable, and the record-keeping that supports both compliance and warranty management. Maintenance requirements differ by device class and follow manufacturer guidance, usage intensity and local requirements.

Stage four: asset management

Beyond individual devices, biomedical engineering manages the fleet: an accurate asset inventory, service histories, performance patterns, and the planning that decides when equipment should be upgraded, replaced or retired. This is also where decisions about standardization and spares strategy are made.

Stage five: decommissioning

When equipment reaches end of service, biomedical engineering manages the transition safely — continuity of clinical service during changeover, safe deinstallation, appropriate handling of data-bearing components, and disposal in line with applicable requirements.

Building the capability

How a facility obtains biomedical engineering capability varies — in-house departments, contracted service providers, or a combination. What matters is that the capability is planned, and that it is involved from the beginning of each equipment purchase rather than only at the first breakdown.
