How Preventive Maintenance Supports Medical Equipment Reliability

What preventive maintenance is

Preventive maintenance (PM) is the practice of servicing equipment on a planned schedule, before faults occur — rather than waiting for breakdowns. For medical equipment, PM typically includes scheduled inspection, cleaning, replacement of serviceable parts as specified by the manufacturer, functional checks and, where applicable, calibration or verification.

Why it matters for medical equipment

Medical equipment differs from general machinery in one important respect: its performance can affect patient care directly. A device that switches on is not necessarily a device performing within its intended parameters. Structured maintenance helps:

  • Protect uptime. Planned servicing finds issues before they become failures that interrupt clinical services.
  • Support patient safety. Functional and safety checks help confirm equipment performs as intended between services.
  • Preserve value. Well-maintained equipment has a longer, more dependable service life and a stronger service and warranty record.
  • Maintain compliance. Where regulations or accreditation schemes require documented maintenance, a PM programme produces the records.

What a PM programme involves

A practical programme is built around three things:

  1. A schedule for each device. Intervals should follow the manufacturer's guidance, adjusted for usage intensity and the device's clinical role. Requirements vary between equipment types.
  2. Defined procedures. Each service visit should follow a documented checklist appropriate to the device.
  3. Records. Every service, fault and repair should be logged against the asset — this history informs future servicing decisions and budgeting.

Corrective maintenance is still part of the picture

PM reduces the frequency of breakdowns, but it does not eliminate faults. A good maintenance strategy combines preventive visits with a responsive process for corrective repairs, and uses fault history to refine the preventive schedule.

The takeaway

Preventive maintenance is one of the most cost-effective investments a healthcare facility can make in its equipment fleet. Its exact form depends on the equipment, its usage and the manufacturer's requirements — which is why maintenance plans are best developed per device class, with qualified biomedical engineering input.
